Medical Student Clerkship

Introduction:

The clinical clerkship is a four (4) week rotation.  During your clerkship at HCA Florida Brandon Hospital, you will be working under the supervision of residents and attendings.  Due to the nature of Emergency Medicine, you will be scheduled roughly 16 shifts on days, afternoons, nights, and weekends.  During your experience at Brandon Hospital, you will encounter a wide array of patients, complaints, and acuity levels.  Learning will be through direct patient care, conferences, simulation, and assigned readings.

Orientation:

Please arrive at the GME offices as stated in the email on the first Monday of your 4-week rotation. Orientation will consist of obtaining your badge, Meditech access, a program overview presentation, expectations, and a tour of our beautiful emergency department.

Shifts:

The duration of shifts will be eight (8) to ten (10) hours long.  You will be scheduled to work shifts on days, afternoons, nights, and weekends. During your 13 shifts, you will be working with senior residents (2nd or 3rd year) and Core Faculty Attendings. During your shift, you are required to write one (1) case in your booklet.  A total of sixteen (16) cases should be done and signed by an attending by the end of your clerkship. At the conclusion of each shift, you will give your attending physicians an individualized survey for feedback, which will be utilized for the construction of your SLOE.

Conferences:

Conferences will be held each Thursday at the GME classroom from 7 am - 12 pm. These will be interactive, engaging, and often have a simulation component! At the final conference of your rotation, you will be expected to prepare and present a 10-15 minute PowerPoint presentation on the topic or case of your choosing!

Curriculum:

At HCA Florida Brandon Hospital, our clerkship utilizes the SAEM curriculum. You will be given access to practice tests and vital study material each week. At the end of your 4-week rotation, you will take a standardized SAEM exam.

SLOEs:

Upon the completion of your 4-week audition rotation, you will be given a standardized letter of evaluation which will serve as a vital part of your journey into emergency medicine. It will be composed as follows: 20% shift evaluations, 10% completion of patient cases and procedural checklists, 20% case presentation, 20% simulation test, 30% SAEM exam.

Thank You:
